Lesson Materials/Resources
No Materials/Resources attachedObjectives
- Develop foundational reading and writing skills found in Treasures TE guidelines
- Analyze and connect science vocabulary to sentence structure and new information
- Connect observations, peer discussions, and direct instruction to understand the lifecycle of a beetle and apply it to graphic representations with title and labels
- Reinforce life cycle concepts using strategies including observations, analysis, reading, charts, questioning and drawing
Teachers will follow the Treasures TE guidelines and materials to deliver instruction in Foundations of Reading and Writing. Sentence Patterning Chart (reinforced by singing “Farmer in the Dell”):
Adjectives | Noun Beetles | Verbs | Prepositional Phrase |
After making a large chart, model sentence patterning with the song, “Farmer in the Dell”. Ask students to be aware of the sequence of words in sentences; charting or tracking lyrics on a large chart may help. (“Use frequently occurring prepositions” is a Gr. K CC standard; “Form and use prepositional phrases” is a Gr. 4 CC standard.)
Assessment/CFU
Life-Cycle of Beetle: Diagram on big paper with pictures and labels asking students to pull information from the YouTube video to help. Life Cycle Charts: Students work in small groups of 3-4 using small icons or drawing pictures to recreate the lifecycle of a beetle. Students negotiate and agree on the placement of these pictures in correct sequential order before drawing or gluing them to paper. Life Cycle Charts may be posted and shared for Open House. Writing Activity: Omit writing activity from Day 4, Treasures TE. Instead, label and title pictures or drawings from the Life Cycle Charts using proximate spelling.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
If copyright permission granted or subscription in place, substitute the story, “How the Beetles Got Their Beautiful Coats” instead of reading “The Elephant and the Bees.” (If not, use TE guidelines and stories.) Before, during and after the reading, have students generate questions, predict situations, and find answers to questions based on the text. (On Day 6, use a 2-column chart to compare the rat and the beetle from the story using the same format described in Treasures TE 2122 for “The Elephant and the Bees.”)
