Assessment/CFU
Venn Diagram to Compare/Contrast Characters:
If copyright permissions are in place, re-read, “How Beetles Got Their Beautiful Coats” (www.readinga-z.com). Have students analyze the rat and the beetle by comparing/contrasting the characters using a Venn Diagram. This replaces the activity from Day 4, TE p. 2131. Develop one sentence describing each character.
Fascinating Facts Chart:
Explore and discuss the amazing features of insects, including, but not limited to: bioluminescence, horns, spikes, colors, patterning, and mobility and defense mechanisms. Record these ideas on a “Fascinating Facts Chart” to be used for final writing activity on Day 7.
Opening/Warmup/Connecting Prior Knowledge
Guess My Category Game:
Make a large chart of 4 squares x 4 squares (see sample below). The teacher should prepare appropriate category headings 1-6 and print out multiple pictures of various insects of the same approximate size to fit the chart squares.
Students will select or be assigned 1 picture each. After considering the chart headings, each student will, in turn, place his or her picture in one of the boxes. Students must provide reasons to justify why they placed the picture in the category they selected. (This can be played more than one round to include all students.)
