Observation Walk:
Students use Science/Dinosaur journals to act like scientists and record observations as they walk around the room looking at different resources on tables. Encourage use of Students will act like scientists as they conduct an Observation Walk of Dinosaur resources in the classroom. They will use their journals to making or taking notes in their journals. Encourage more precise adjectives while students are recording, e.g., use enormous instead of big. After walk, students share observations with a new partner to compare how their notes are the same or different (collaborating scientists). As scientists, ask them to revise or change their notes based on what they learned from their partner scientist.
Introduce the video from National Geographic by saying we will look at what other scientists can share with us about the Prehistoric World. Ask students to take notes in their journals if they choose.
KWL Chart-Dinosaurs:
Begin recording student responses to the first column on Day 1 and continue through Day 5. Day 6/7 will include a culminating research activity where students detail facts they have learned regarding dinosaurs using multiple resources including the KWL Chart.

Pre-read; preview trade book with students by looking at the cover explain, “This is a fantasy story. We know that fantasy stories are fiction – not true. Looking at the cover, how can we tell this story will be a fantasy? How do you know? As we read ask, let’s think about what parts make this story a fantasy.”
Read: Pointing out parts the that are fantasy or “fantastic.” After Reading: Chart the parts that were Fantasy on the left side of a 2-column chart (Reserve the right side for a comparative list later in the week about characteristics of “non-fiction.”)
After reading: Ask, “What made this story a fantasy?”
