Assessment/CFU
Writing Process - Fictional Narrative: Dialogue TE 79L
Writing/Art Activity:
Students create a new constellation and write a folktale about it. Students can choose any type of art supplies to create their constellation.
Prewrite:
- As a class, write characteristics of one of the folktales read to the class by the teacher (perhaps begin listing characteristics of folktales after the first, adding to list with each subsequent folktale).
- As a class, list possible animals or characters which or who might become the primary character in their folktale (i.e. trickster, hero, etc…).
- Model and then ask each student to use three index cards labeled first, next and last. He or she will follow the teacher’s example and draw three pictures of their tale to represent first, next, and last events on their index cards. Ask students to then write at least 2-3 sentences for each card to describe what is happening in their folktale. Coach those who conclude this portion to add transitions between the three cards (and then, because, that caused, etc.)
OR
- Model and ask students to use a graphic organizer to generate ideas to develop a folktale using peer feedback to build on their basic ideas (add descriptive details, use sensory details, connect events, etc.)
First Draft
- All students write a folktale. Teacher moves about the room conducting writers’ conferences with individual students or small groups as they write.
Revise/Edit and Final Drafts
Students could use a feedback form to elicit peer feedback for their folktale. (Example: I Liked...I Wondered...I Might Suggest...)
- Teacher models how to use the rubric to revise a folktale, including the optional assessment rubric in the demonstration (see Attachment 3). Also demonstrate how students can use Language standards and/or proofreading checklists to proofread their writing. Then ask students to use this feedback and/or analysis to revise and refine their folktales.
Publish
- Have students share folktales in groups and perhaps have students select or nominate one from each group to share with the whole class.
- Students can draw a picture or star chart to accompany their constellations and folk tales.
Plan re-teaching for students who struggle with this project.
