Packing For Mars Activity Visit Link
-
Life in Space Visit Link
Objectives
- Synthesize research and data into a “real world” plan to travel into space and to open a classroom “aerospace museum”
- Collaborate with peers and adults to share and present lessons learned in role playing as museum designers, exhibitors, docents, tour guides, and experts
- Conduct a collaborative post-event plan to identify strengths, needs, and next steps
Assessment/CFU
Packing for Mars Activity:
- Teacher explains that each student will be taking a trip to Mars. Teacher will remind students about some of Mars’ features and characteristics and generate from students what basic necessities they may need to survive as astronauts. Student groups will be traveling together as a “crew” (2-3 students in a group).
- Teacher Resource (teacher should pre-read)
- “Packing for a Lo-o-o-n-g Trip to Mars”
- Students will work in “crew” groups to identify one or more tasks on Mars, calculate distances to Mars from launch sites, list steps they will need to take to accomplish each task, assign roles, and list what they will need to pack to travel to and from Mars. (May need a few ground rules for activity or criteria for tasks, e.g. weight or space limits, oxygen source, food requirements.)
- Crews will then be asked to share their lists with a second “crew” for feedback, suggestions, and revisions.
- Crews will then prepare, revise, and refine a Mission Packet (TBD by teacher) which includes information such as crew names, tasks, roles, equipment and rations, maps, etc., the information they have compiled for their trip to Mars.
Artifact for Black Wall:
Post or display Mission Packets. Teacher and/or students may include graphic or model of Mars near this exhibit.
