Lesson Materials/Resources
No Materials/Resources attachedObjectives
- Use scientific text sources to collect, organize, and present data about a topic supported by facts, details and evidence
- Analyze using compare/contrast strategy to clarify and present information based on small group research
- Supplement research with art to produce a “museum” worthy artifact
Assessment/CFU
Research Activity
Compare/Contrast Earth and another planet (NOT Pluto – because it is not a planet)
- Teacher will randomly assign each small group of students (2-3) a planet (excluding Earth or Pluto). The group will then conduct research to find information that allows them to compare their planet to Earth using the text feature (chart) like the example on pg. 87 in Wonders (including surface, diameter, number of moons, average distance from the Sun, orbit, length of one day, and perhaps 1-2 additional pieces of information of the group’s choice.) Students will prepare the chart with their group peers and enter the data in a ______________they discovered about their planet.
- Each group will share their chart with the class and information about their planet.
Integrated Art Activity:
- Students can make a two- (or three- ?) dimensional art project or illustrated chart of their planet using any type of art materials that they have access to within the classroom. (Teacher may have collected a box of art materials for this purpose including colored paper, felt, yarn, paint, markers, Styrofoam balls, paper clips, cardboard tubes, etc.
Artifacts for black wall:
Students will hang their planet artwork and charts on the black wall to complete the Solar System exhibit.
