A Picture is Worth 1000 Words
Outcome: students develop a collaborative tale related to classical painting.
A class selects a classical painting. (The teacher may want to have a few loaded on the computer for students’ review and selection, or have one chosen as the focus before the lesson.) Looking at this painting for inspiration (teacher needs to define inspiration), one group develops a few sentences as the opening paragraph of a tale based on group discussion and suggestions. This paragraph is then sent on to another group, (carousel rotation strategy), which reads the first paragraph and adds a second. The process is repeated including as many groups as possible until the tale seems finished. The class then gathers to hear the result of their group effort by hearing the story read aloud while viewing the painting that inspired their story.
Adjective Activity – Teacher may want to ask students to bring in an odd looking stone that is no larger than the palm of their hands. Students can then do this activity in small groups and multiple times by switching stones.
Describing a Stone - Pass one stone around a circle of students. Each student must share one word that describes the stone without repeating what has been said before. See how many times the stone can go around the circle without repeating words. Adjectives such as hard, smooth, etc. are a start, but any word that comes to mind is acceptable as long as the stone inspires it. For example, a smooth, round, white, oval stone could suggest "egg”. (A vegetable could be substituted for a stone.)
