Black History Month

February is Black History month! Throughout the year, but especially in February, we celebrate the achievements by African Americans and recognize their central role in U.S. history. Black History Month grew out of Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s weeklong celebratory idea that started in the 1920s. Dr. Woodson, a son of former slaves and a graduate of Harvard University, wanted to ensure the stories of African Americans were included and accurately represented in American history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Natomas Unified recognizes this month and encourages all schools to provide opportunities for students, their families, staff, and the entire community to participate in enriching lessons and activities in celebration of Black History month! We invite you to explore this page for resources to honor Black History month.
