To help prepare schools for a major earthquake, NUSD will participate in the “Great California ShakeOut” drill at 10:19 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 19) along with millions of other state residents at public schools, colleges, child care centers, government agencies, businesses, and other groups.

Please remember: This is a drill, there is no emergency.

Students at all district-operated schools will “drop, cover and hold on” for 60 seconds in their classroom, then be evacuated to an outdoor area of their campus. After all students are accounted for, they will return to their classrooms and instruction will resume.

The ShakeOut drill is an annual event meant to remind NUSD students and staff that the best immediate reaction to a major quake is to get under a sturdy desk or table until the initial shaking stops. Running is risking injury from flying glass, collapsing walls, flying objects, or violent ground jerking.

The Great California ShakeOut is organized by the Earthquake Country Alliance, which includes the California Department of Education, California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, U.S. Geological Survey, American Red Cross, California Earthquake Authority, and the California Institute of Technology.
