Shauna Jackson will be a Seawolf next year.

The Inderkum High basketball player signed a letter of intent Wednesday (Nov. 15) to attend Sonoma State University on an athletic scholarship. She was honored by family, friends and teammates at a lunchtime signing ceremony at Inderkum.

“It’s exciting,” she said of becoming a Sonoma State Seawolf. “I’ve always wanted to further my career in basketball at college.”

Jackson’s signing came two days before her birthday and about a week before Thanksgiving, giving her yet another reason to be thankful this holiday season.

Sonama State’s scholarship to Jackson proves there’s still a place in college basketball for a versatile 5-foot-11 team leader who doesn’t have eye-popping statistics – 4 points and 5 rebounds per game last year – but is respected by peers, works hard, can play two positions, loves the game, is very athletic, and has all-around skills and high potential.

“She’s very coachable and she’s unselfish almost to a fault,” said Inderkum Coach Phillip Hampton, who added that Jackson is a Tigers team captain this year and has a high basketball IQ, meaning she’s like a coach on the court, instinctively knowing what needs to be done and communicating that to teammates.

Jackson qualifies for college in the classroom, too, and wants to be a sports physical therapist. At Inderkum, Jackson has played shooting guard and small forward for the Tigers’ basketball team. She also competed in volleyball for two years, and has been a mainstay in track – triple jump, long jump, and 4-x-100 meter relay.

“I’m very proud of her,” said her mother, Cebrina Jackson. “I know she’s very excited (about playing basketball in college.) It’s something she’s wanted since the 6th grade. She just loves the game.”

Cebrina Jackson also is pleased that her daughter will attend Sonoma State University, a fairly short drive from Sacramento. “It’s close enough that I can see her,” she said, smiling.
