Call it the “Triple Crown.”

Shawn Hines does – and the Inderkum High School bandleader couldn’t be prouder after his 29-member Winter Color Guard won its third consecutive Northern California championship days ago.

“I’m extremely proud of these kids,” Hines said. “To win three times in a row is unheard-of, it truly is.”

“In a loving way, I say this,” Hines added, smiling. “Inderkum definitely has a target on its back now.”

Inderkum captured the massive championship trophy last week at the Northern California Band Association’s 2015 finals for band units performing during the winter season. Competition was held at Rosemont High School in Sacramento.

High school winter guard units perform lively sequences featuring dance, music and special equipment, such as flags, rifles or sabers. Inderkum’s unit competed in NCBA’s intermediate division.

Separately, Inderkum’s 32-member Winter Percussion Ensemble – largely drummers – finished just one slot below the Northern California champion, Fairfield High, in its division. Inderkum tied with Placer High School for runner-up honors.

Afterward, the Inderkum percussion unit did something that Hines won’t soon forget. Since the Tigers tied with Placer and the trophy could not be split down the middle, Inderkum stepped aside and let its rival go home happy, trophy in hand.

“It was class at its finest moment,” Hines said.
