Dear Natomas Families and Stakeholders,
Part of the challenge of leading through a pandemic is dealing with the importance of what needs to be addressed now, while also keeping an eye on the future. School ends in 21 distance learning days. Summer School is unpredictable right now. I have also shared the real possibility that 2020-2021 may be unique. A major unknown is how we will be asked to address potential future outbreaks of the Coronavirus during the next school year. A lot will have to do with the availability of testing, the types of testing, and the estimated timeline of 12-18 months until a vaccine could be developed. My last communication and Wednesday’s Board Meeting was sobering but honest.
In my last message to you, I wrote about the unpredictability of budgeting during a pandemic. I said “So all of this creates a paradox, or more simply put, things that might not make sense. In the middle of a budget crisis, we are going to have to spend more money on technology and operations to deal with “shorter-term closures” that could be likely on and off, school by school, in 2020-2021. One day you will see us budget to reduce something and the next spend hundreds of thousands on technology.”
Today, we are looking forward to replenishing anticipated damaged Chromebooks and buying some extra. By using already budgeted money and expectations of one-time emergency resources from the federal and state levels, we are acquiring enough Chromebooks so that ON A TEMPORARY BASIS, our ratio of Chromebooks to students will be 1 to 1. In short, for every student, we will be able to provide a Chromebook.
Why? We do not know for sure when the Shelter-in-Place will end or if traditional school will resume on time. The best way to generate new hope is to move forward with planning that will benefit our students. As I shared before, there could be targeted school closures during 2020-2021, and we have to be ready. We need to figure out how fast we can pivot to a distance learning model for a week or two at a time, school by school (if needed). Every instructional day will matter and having a 1 to 1 model at each school will allow us to move quickly from the traditional classroom setting to distance learning when required. This 1 on 1 approach is TEMPORARY, for one year, costly, but represents the school Board’s direction that your student’s safety and education remain our top priorities. When school facilities reopen, our students and staff will be able to take the positive lessons learned from Distance Learning and approach learning differently. Or if a school or more has to close for a week or two, we will be ready to move even faster and limit learning loss.
We will work with colleagues and labor partners to address how this might look for the 2020-2021 school year. For now, please know even while we are fully engaged in distance learning, graduation decisions, and other current challenges, we are also preparing for August 2020. While we wait to see where state guidance takes us, we will invest and prepare for 2020-21 and what’s best for our students. This progress forward and another complete week of distance learning leaves me hopeful and grateful for our Natomas Unified community. Thank you and enjoy the sun this weekend!

Un día nos verá presupuestar para reducir algo y el próximo gastará cientos de miles en tecnología “.
Hoy, esperamos reabastecer los Chromebooks dañados anticipados y comprar algunos adicionales. Al usar el dinero ya presupuestado y las expectativas de recursos únicos de emergencia de los niveles federal y estatal, estamos adquiriendo suficientes Chromebooks para que EN UNA BASE TEMPORAL, nuestra proporción de Chromebooks por estudiantes sea de 1 a 1. ¿Por qué? No sabemos con certeza cuándo terminará el Refugio en el lugar o si la escuela tradicional se reanudará a tiempo. Cómo compartí antes, podría haber cierres de escuelas específicos durante 2020-2021, y tenemos que estar listos. Necesitamos averiguar qué tan rápido podemos pasar a un modelo de aprendizaje a distancia durante una semana o dos a la vez, escuela por escuela (si es necesario). Cada día de instrucción será importante y tener un modelo 1 a 1 en cada escuela cual nos permitirá pasar rápidamente del aula tradicional al aprendizaje a distancia cuando sea necesario. Este enfoque 1 a 1 es TEMPORAL, por un año, costoso, pero representa la dirección de la Directiva Escolar de que la seguridad y la educación de sus estudiantes siguen siendo nuestra major prioridad. Cuando se vuelvan a abrir las instalaciones escolares, nuestros estudiantes y el personal podrán tomar las lecciones positivas aprendidas del aprendizaje a distancia y abordar el aprendizaje de manera diferente. O si una escuela o más tiene que cerrar durante una o dos semanas, estaremos listos para avanzar aún más rápido y limitar la pérdida de aprendizaje.
